When the Lion Roars (1 Peter 5)
Suffering has a way of asking the hardest questions — about God, about your future, about whether any of this is worth it. In Week 4 of Unseen Battles, we open 1 Peter 5 and discover that the arena of suffering is one of the enemy's favorite battlegrounds — not because he can destroy you, but because he knows that pain makes his lies sound reasonable. The real battle isn't your circumstances. It's what you believe about God in the middle of them. And the good news? The Lion you worship is louder than the enemy prowling around you.
Are you facing a season of heavy suffering, anxiety, or unexpected difficulty? In the arena of suffering, the real spiritual battle isn't just about your physical circumstances—it's about what you believe to be true about God in the middle of them. In week four of our Unseen Battles series at Summit Church, Pastor Justin Valicette dives into 1 Peter 5 to reveal how the enemy uses the "roar" of suffering to make us doubt God's goodness, care, and control.
When life gets chaotic, the enemy loves to whisper that God has abandoned you. But you don't have to carry the heavy weight of an uncertain future! Discover how to grow in faith by humbling yourself under God's mighty hand and casting your anxiety on the One who deeply cares for you. This powerful message offers practical Christian encouragement for difficult seasons, teaching you how to tune your heart back to God’s truth when anxiety tries to take over.
Learn how to recognize the enemy's roar, resist the devil by standing firm in your faith, and find unshakeable hope in the ultimate victory of the Lion of Judah. Small Group Guide
Session Overview
In this session of Unseen Battles, we step into the arena of suffering and anxiety. We learn that the enemy acts like a roaring lion, using our painful circumstances to make us doubt God's care. However, we can find perfect peace and spiritual victory by humbly casting our cares upon the Lord and anchoring our hearts in the truth of the gospel.
Icebreaker
Have you ever been caught in a massive wave at the beach, a terrifying roller coaster, or a wild storm? Did you try to fight it, or did you just surrender and hold on for the ride?
Discussion Questions
Observation: Pastor Justin compared the enemy to a roaring lion, noting that a roar itself does no physical damage, but it causes instant panic. How does this illustration change the way you view the enemy's attacks and whispers in your own life?
Interpretation: Read 1 Peter 5:5-11. What is the direct connection between humbling ourselves under God's mighty hand and being able to cast our anxieties on Him?
Reflection: Anxiety was described as an internal "wobble"—like an out-of-tune guitar string—where our minds are divided between trusting God and trying to control a godless future. In what area of your life are you currently feeling that "wobble" or anxiety?
Reflection: When suffering hits, the enemy often roars lies like, "God doesn't care," "You are entirely on your own," or "God is punishing you." Which of these lies are you most tempted to believe when things go wrong?
Application: In order to stand firm, we were challenged to look at the Reality, the Roar, and the Reminder. Which of these three steps is the hardest for you to practice when you are feeling overwhelmed, and how can this group help you remember what is true?
Weekly Application Challenge
The 3 R's Anxiety Check-in This week, you will likely face a moment where you feel the physical or emotional warning signs of anxiety rising. Instead of letting the "wobble" take over or trying to control the situation in your own strength, pause and walk through the 3 R's:
Reality: Honestly admit what is hard right now. Do not stuff it down.
Roar: Identify the specific lie the enemy is trying to make you believe about your future or God's character.
Reminder: Speak one true promise of God out loud over your situation (e.g., "God is mighty, He is in control, and He cares for me").
