The Champion (Matthew 4)
Before Jesus ever preached a sermon, healed anyone, or called a single disciple — He walked into the wilderness. On purpose. In Week 3 of Unseen Battles, we follow Jesus into Matthew 4 and watch our champion face the same three lies the enemy still whispers to us today: you can't trust God to provide, He must prove himself before you obey, and you can have what God promised without doing it God's way. This isn't just a story about Jesus resisting temptation. It's the moment He won a victory that now belongs to you.
Are you facing temptations that make you question God’s goodness or doubt His timing? In the spiritual warfare we fight every day, the enemy loves to whisper subtle lies that challenge our trust in the Father. In this powerful message from Summit Church, Pastor Orlando continues our Unseen Battles series by looking at the ultimate unseen showdown: Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness.
Just like David stepped into the valley as Israel’s champion, Jesus stepped into the wilderness as ours. He didn't just set an example for us to follow; He secured the victory on our behalf. By unpacking Matthew chapter 4, we discover how the enemy uses three distinct lies—self-provision, presumption, and self-promotion—to tempt us into meeting our real needs in the wrong ways. If you are seeking Christian encouragement for difficult seasons or want to learn how to grow in faith, this sermon will equip you with biblical strategies to fight back. You don’t need to strive for a breakthrough; you get to stand in the victory Christ has already won! Learn how to wield God’s Word as your greatest weapon and find complete rest in the truth that you are God’s beloved child. Watch now and step into unshakeable faith today!

Session Overview
In this session of Unseen Battles, we look to the wilderness to see Jesus face the enemy not just as our example, but as our Champion. We discover that true spiritual warfare isn't about fighting for victory in our own strength, but learning how to stand firmly in the victory that Christ has already won for us by trusting God's Word over the enemy's lies.
Icebreaker
If you could take a "shortcut" to master any specific skill or talent instantly (without having to put in the hours of practice), what would you choose and why?
Discussion Questions
Observation: The message compared Jesus in the wilderness to David stepping into the valley to face Goliath. What does it mean for your daily faith to view Jesus as your "Champion" rather than just a moral teacher?
Interpretation: Read Matthew 4:1-11. Notice how Jesus responds to every single temptation. What is the significance of Him starting His defense with the phrase, "It is written..."?
Reflection: The first temptation (Self-Provision) involves meeting a legitimate need in an illegitimate way—turning stones to bread instead of waiting on God. Where in your life are you currently most tempted to take control instead of trusting God's timing?
Reflection: The second temptation (Presumption) is about testing God and making demands. Have you ever found yourself saying, "God, if You just fix this one thing, then I will fully trust and obey You"? How does that mindset hinder true surrender?
Application: Pastor Orlando noted that every temptation is ultimately a question of worship. When faced with the desire to take a shortcut this week, how can you actively choose to worship God in the middle of your waiting?
Weekly Application Challenge
The "It Is Written" Defense This week, you will likely face a moment of anxiety, doubt, or temptation to take a shortcut. Do not argue with the enemy or rely on your own willpower. Instead, choose one specific area where you are struggling, find one scripture that speaks God’s truth over that situation, and write it on a sticky note or make it your phone background. When the lie gets loud, respond exactly like Jesus did: speak out loud, "It is written..." and declare God's truth over your life.
