See Clearly, Stand Firm (Ephesians 6)

Military strategist John Boyd developed the OODA Loop — Observe, Orient, Decide, Act — after discovering that pilots who could accurately read their situation under pressure consistently won, even in inferior aircraft. In Week 7 of Unseen Battles, Ephesians 6 calls us to do the same thing. Before you can stand firm, you have to see clearly. Who is the enemy? What is he actually after? And what has God already given you to fight back? The battle is bigger than you — but so is the strength available to you.

Are you feeling spiritually exhausted, overwhelmed, or knocked off your feet by the unseen battles in your life? In this powerful message from Summit Church, Pastor Jamon kicks off a two-part look at Ephesians 6, teaching us what it truly means to stand firm against the enemy's schemes.

Just like a fighter pilot must correctly assess reality to survive aerial combat, Christians must honestly assess the spiritual reality around them. The enemy wants to steal your joy, kill your faith, and destroy your relationships, but you do not have to fight in your own strength! Discover the biblical strategy for spiritual warfare: recognizing the true nature of the battle, relying entirely on God’s mighty power, and preparing to put on the armor of God.

If you are looking for Christian encouragement for difficult seasons and want to know how to grow in faith, this teaching will equip you to stop relying on your own limited strength. Learn how to draw near to God in communion so that His perfect power can resource your weakness. Though the enemy seeks to knock us down, God has given us absolutely everything we need to stand firm. Watch now and find renewed strength today!

Session Overview

In this session of Unseen Battles, we look at the reality of spiritual warfare through the lens of Ephesians 6. We learn that while the enemy actively seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, God has completely equipped us to stand firm. True victory doesn't come from our own willpower, but from correctly assessing our spiritual reality and allowing God's strength to fully resource our weakness.

Icebreaker

  • Have you ever been completely knocked off your feet (e.g., by a strong ocean wave, a clumsy pet, slipping on ice, or playing a sport)? What happened?

Discussion Questions

  1. Observation: Pastor Jamon shared the military concept of the "OODA loop" (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act). How does understanding and correctly "orienting" to our spiritual reality give us an advantage against the enemy?

  2. Interpretation: Read Ephesians 6:10-13. Who exactly does Paul say our true struggle is against, and why is it so important to remember that our battle is not against flesh and blood?

  3. Reflection: We looked at John 10:10 to see the enemy's strategy: Steal (peace, joy, time), Kill (marriages, families, faith), and Destroy (hope, identity, community). Which of these tactics do you feel the enemy is currently trying to use against you or your family?

  4. Reflection: Pastor Jamon noted that we often try to operate in our own strength until we are completely exhausted. When the pressure rises in your life, what broken cisterns (e.g., control, isolation, overworking, numbing) do you naturally run to instead of relying on God's strength?

  5. Application: The message emphasized that communion with God is the doorway to His strength. What is one specific, intentional way you can improve your daily communion with God this week to better access His strength?

Weekly Application Challenge

The "Flesh and Blood" Shift This week, you will likely encounter a frustrating situation or conflict with another person. When you feel your anger or anxiety rising against them, pause and literally say out loud to yourself: "My battle is not against flesh and blood." Use that moment to pray for the person instead of fighting with them, asking God for His strength to stand firm against the actual spiritual enemy trying to cause division.
