Orphan Sunday

Orphan Sunday Slide.jpg

On November 11th, the Church will be recognizing Orphan Sunday.  It is a day that churches all around the world take time to pray for vulnerable children.  Here at Summit, we spend time each year on Orphan Sunday acknowledging the plight of the orphan and praying for children who are marginalized and in dire situations.  We do this both in the weekend services and in a Sunday evening worship service.

We, as the church, have the privilege of being entrusted with the call to care.  Not only does this call allow us as believers to step out and grow in faith, but it also puts the gospel on display for a world that is desperate to see true hope and love.  Because of the extravagant way that the Lord has loved us, we are compelled to care and we are sustained as we respond.

As the church, it’s important for us to be aware of and engage with the need.  Here are just a few numbers to give you an idea of our current situation:

Globally

• 140 million children estimated to be orphans

 In the United States

• There are approximately 427,910 children in foster care

• There are 111,820 children in foster care waiting to be adopted.

• The average age of a child waiting to be adopted is 7 years, 6 months.

• Every year more than 20,000 children age out of foster care, without families.

In Florida

• There are 24,390 children in foster care.

• About 791 of these children are available for adoption.

In Southwest Florida

• There are 569 children in foster care just in Lee and Collier counties.

• Because of the lack of court appointed volunteers who represent the best interest of the child (Guardian ad Litems), only 63% of the children in the system in SWFL have this very necessary aspect of care.

Number of caring adults it takes to make a life-long difference for a child - 1

These many needs provide the Church with an amazing opportunity to step into difficult and hopeless situations and bring the light of Christ.  At Summit, we partner with some great ministries that are actively engaged in helping to relieve the suffering of vulnerable children.  Several of our partners will be with us at each of the weekend services, as well at the evening Every Child Initiative Worship service.  They will be sharing about opportunities to get involved and answering questions. We hope to see you there.

November 11, 2018, 6-8pm at our University Campus

Community Groups

CommunityGroups_1920x1080.jpg

Living in community isn’t something we do; it’s something that is meant to be central to the very essence of who are. To know and be known. After all, as Christ’s people, he made us alive together!

Even a quick glimpse at the early church reveals the ‘togetherness’ of God’s people as the Holy Spirit stirs an explosion of praise and worship, feasting, word-centered teaching, radical generosity and missional living! Holistic discipleship to Jesus is happening within this Spirit-filled community.

Likewise at Summit, a primary place we live out our discipleship to Jesus is in the context of our gospel-centered Community Groups. It’s here we grow in Christ as we demonstrate our 5 discipleship outcomes and express our love and care for one another!

Community Groups are open to all, team-led, word-based and focused on our values; with everything geared toward multiplying disciples and seeing the gospel saturate our communities!

To be a part of a Community Group, simply stop by the Connection Center at your campus and pick up a list of Groups in your area, or, you can email your campus contact.

Jesus is Better

JIB_Mobile_1536x864.jpg

Originally written to recent converts to Christianity from Judaism, the book of Hebrews is a written sermon that reminds its readers that Jesus is the fulfillment of the old covenant and the new and better way. Today, this message still rings true. Even though we are often tempted to look elsewhere for satisfaction, worth, or fulfillment, we hear the writer of Hebrews remind us, “Jesus is better.”

We're excited to see how God uses this series to shape us as we study the book of Hebrews this Fall!

Here's a helpful video for understanding the overarching themes that are found in Hebrews!

Serve Our Schools

SERVE OUR SCHOOLS

Each year, we have the God-given opportunity to serve the schools and students within our Circles of Accountability (COA) by providing uniforms, backpacks and school supplies.  Please join us in multiplying our gospel influence as we tangibly represent the love of Christ to our partner schools and the students in our communities. Not only does this simple act of love imitate Christ's generosity, but it also provides us with opportunities to proclaim the message of the gospel through a variety of ways as we build relationships with the administrations and teachers.

To participate, simple pick up a supply list from the table at your campus this weekend! Thank you!

SUMMER SERIES - LOVE ONE ANOTHER

What distinguishes Christian community from other relationships? The way we love, encourage and care for each other is a reflection of the way that Jesus ministers to us. In our Summer series, Love One Another, we’ll look to the words of Scripture, and ask the Lord to strengthen our community as He empowers us to love one another, and reflect His love to a watching world.
